My journey to the USA at Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) in Michigan as a UGRAD student (Global Undergraduate Exchange Program) for one semester has come to an end. I would like to share my experiences.

It was an incredible adventure that broadened my horizons in ways I never imagined. Coming from Vanuatu, I was initially apprehensive about snowy winters. The first time I saw snow falling from the sky, I couldn’t help but feel a childish sense of wonder and excitement (even though it’s 10 times colder for me than for the Americans). Embracing the cold, I joined snowball fights, built snowmen, and relished every moment of this unique experience.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at SVSU was the friendships I forged. Surrounded by a diverse community of students, I discovered the true meaning of camaraderie and inclusivity. Together, we navigated the challenges of coursework, explored American culture, and created memories that will last a lifetime. These friendships transcended cultural differences and enriched my understanding of the world.

But the adventures didn’t stop there. During spring break, I took advantage of the opportunity to explore beyond Michigan. One highlight was my visit to the iconic New York City, where the bustling streets, towering skyscrapers, and endless array of cultural attractions left me in awe. It was a whirlwind of excitement and discovery, and I returned to campus with a newfound appreciation for the diversity and dynamism of America.

Another impactful part of my exchange program was attending a workshop in Washington, D.C., where I had the incredible opportunity to connect with other students from 50 different countries and meet with World Learning team. Through workshops, seminars, and cultural exchanges, we shared our stories, learned from each other’s perspectives, and built bridges across continents. It was a powerful reminder of the transformative potential of international education. I left feeling inspired and empowered to continue building bridges across borders.

My exchange program experience in the USA was truly a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Each moment was filled with growth, discovery, and the joy of forging connections that span the globe. I am filled with gratitude for the friendships made, the lessons learned, and the countless memories that will stay with me forever.

To my fellow Ni-Vanuatu students, I wholeheartedly encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and apply for exchange programs like UGRAD. Embrace the unknown, take the opportunity for growth, and experience the world in all its diversity. It’s an adventure that you’ll never forget!!!
