SITUATION OVERVIEW:

Earthquake Location: Latitude: 17.7 Degree South,
Longitude: 167.8 Degree East
(34 Km West of Efate and 150Km West of Erromango)

IMMEDIATE IMPACT:
• Most of the damage in Port Vila, Efate.
• Main down town Port Vila, Efate closed to public.
Many injured and missing
• 14 confirmed deaths (4 at Vila Central Hospital (VCH), 6 in the landslide, 4 in
Billabong building, however number expected to increase). Over 200 injured
treated at the main hospital (VCH) a n d numbers expected to increase
• Many buildings sustain major structural damage:
At least 10 building in Port Vila town (Billabong Building, US Embassy
building, New Zealand High Commission building, UK Embassy, Wong store
building, VCH structural damage therefore main building was evacuated to
– Search and rescue in damaged building still ongoing.
Damage to Tagabe bridge, Teouma bridge and Blacksand bridge
• Damage to power lines and public water supply in the urban area.
Two major water reserves in Ohlen area which supplies water to Port Vila are
totally destroyed and will need reconstruction, assessment of water network is
ongoing
• Intermittent mobile and internet connectivity.
• Ports of Entry – Port Vila main wharf (Lapetasi) is closed due to major landslide

• Port Vila Airport not operational, aircraft fuel reserve contaminated, however
operational for incoming humanitarian assistance
• Nearby villages near Efate experience landslides
IMMEDIATE NEED:
• Medical supplies and repairs to damage medical structures
• Mobile Emergency Medical Teams
• Search and Rescue Teams and heavy machinery for cleaning landslides and
collapse buildings
• Safe drinking water and Jerry Cans.
R E S P O N S E E F F O R T S
• NEOC operational and National Surge capacity activated.
• Joint Police Operation Centre (JPOC) assisting with search and rescue
• UNELCO is working to restore power and water supply
• Relocation of emergency service for VCH to VMF, ongoing treatment of injuries
by health services and pro-medical
• Cluster response activated.
